Mann is known for directing great pictures like The Last of the Mohicans in 1992, Collateral in 2004 and many more. Ali tells the story of Muhammad Ali aka Cassius Clay, the icon of heavyweight boxing. In the role of Ali we can see the talented Will Smith. And let me tell you up front, Will Smith was just incredible in this role. In fact, both, Will Smith and Michael Mann, were so dedicated to make this film as good as possible that they offered to put up their salaries in case the film went over-budget.
So, this magnificent film takes us all the way back to 1964 when fresh from his Olympic gold medal victory, a brash new pro boxer, Cassius Clay, explodes onto the scene of heavyweight boxing and follows his career as professional boxer, personal life and problems with the law as he refuses to submit to military conscription for duty in Vietnam for 10 years. I'm not going to bother with a retell. It would be too long for anyone to read. I'll just write about the aspects I found remarkable.
Well, what is definitely worth mentioning is that there are no rocky-type fights. This film is not made to entertain people, it's made to show the life of a great man and that as realistically as possible. In my opinion, they have succeeded at that. Although, I'm not an expert on Ali Muhammads biography, I have only seen few documentaries on his life and video recordings of some of his fights, it seems to me that the matches in the movie are close to perfect reproductions of the real ones. Michael Mann really has focused on getting all the details right.
According to Wikipedia, Ali has won 20 awards. Well, that should be enough of a back up for my rather praising review. Unfortunately, Ali, despite of being nominated in two categories in Academy Awards and in three categories in Golden Globe Awards, didn't win any Oscars or Golden Globes. To me that just seems like a big misunderstanding. I can't recall that there was anything better made that year. Okay, A Beautiful Mind with Russell Crowe was a pretty decent film as well. But trust me, Ali is better.
The users of IMDB have given Ali a rather mediocre score of 6.6 points. I guess a lot of people just can't appreciate when something is made to tell the real story, instead of just being entertaining. Well, from me, this masterpiece get's 8 points out of 10!psychology-knowledgehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09721582861953383016noreply@blogger.com14tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5729854940561472994.post-51002485067577994982012-02-27T20:46:00.014+02:002012-03-01T00:43:50.679+02:00Miss Bala
Miss Bala is a 2011 Mexican drama film written and directed by Gerardo Naranjo. To be honest, the name, Gerardo Naranjo, doesn`t really tell me anything. But let me just tell you up front that this not so famous director did an excellent job writing and directing Miss Bala. The film was even selected as the Mexican entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 84th Academy Awards, unfortunately it didn`t make the final shortlist.
In the lead role we can see unknown but beautiful and talented Stephanie Sigman, who plays the role of Laura Guerrero. A young woman - in her early 20s - who lives with her father and younger brother in Tijuana, Mexico.
The film starts with Laura and her friend Suzu going to an auditon for the Miss Baja beauty pageant. The audition goes well and both girls are asked to come back the following day. For a moment, life seems to be perfect for Laura, she has just successfully taken the first step in the process of realizing her dream of becoming the next Miss Baja. After the audition Laura follows her friend to a seedy nightclub. In there, she soon finds herself being in a wrong place at the wrong time. Lino Hernandez, the local drug kingpin, and his gang, storm the nightclub. Laura lies on the floor and miraculously survives the intense gun fire. After the danger is over, she starts to search for her friend but can`t find her. She ends up spending the night in a café staring at her cell phone, hoping to her from her friend. But as the sun rises, she has not yet heard anything from her firend. She leaves the café. On the street, she spots a police car. Hesitating whether it is the right thing to do or not, she approaches the car. She tells the policeman everything that happened on the previous night and he promises to help her. The policeman says that he will take her to the station to form an official testimony. But instead, he gives her over to the Lino Hernandez gang. The mistake of trusting the policeman, changes Laura`s life tragically. Lino, who takes an immediate shine to Laura, starts to use her in his criminal actions. Laura, afraid for the safety of her family, does everything as told. As Lino appears to be fond of the girl, he uses his criminal ways to secure Laura the Miss Baja title. Laura still taking part in the pageant, after life-chaning encounter with Lino Hernandez, is what makes this film what it is. On one moment Laura is on a street nearly shot to death in an exchange of fire between Lino`s gang and DEA. The next moment, she is thrown to the backstage of the beauty pageant for a quick make up to appear beautiful and cheerful on the stage in just few minutes.
I remember accidentally reading a comment about Miss Bala on Metacritic before watching the movie myself. There was this one guy - I can`t recall his ridiculous username - who said that this movie was fine but appeared as if it had been shot with a cell phone camera. I don`t know what low-budget series of frames did he watch and why he felt the need to write about it on Metacritic`s Miss Bala review page, but he obviously had not seen Miss Bala. This film is expertly shot. Although, the camera work was a little unusual at times, it was so only to make it seem more realistic and bring out the emotions Laura felt more clearly.
Stephanie Sigman did a remarkable job playing Laura Guerrero. Laura did not speak much. So all the emotions - fear, confusion, uncertainty etc - had to be shown with body language only. And Stephanie did a really good job at that. Laura seemed to be in shock pretty much the full time after the shootout in the nightclub.
Noe Hernandez who plays the local drug kingpin Lino Valdez was pretty good as well. He does a great job at bringing out his character`s nasty personality and looking gruesome.
In conclusion, I have to say that I really liked this film. I started to watch it only because I found Stephanie Sigman pretty good-looking and I wasn`t really ready to see something this good. It took me by surprise. It really was a realistic, fast-moving and intense movie that gives the audience a harrowing experience. 9/10 points! An adaption of the V for Vendetta comic book by Alan Moore and David Lloyd. It`s directed by James Mc Teigue. A man known for being the assistant director of Matrix trilogy. So it sounds promising already, right? Well, it get`s better. In the leading role we can see the fantastic every man`s dream girl Natalie Portman. And on an equally important role, we can see Hugo Weaving. No, sorry. We can`t see him. We can only hear his voice. His face is hidden behind a Guy Fawkes mask. A mask well known to people today as the mask used by the group called anonymous and thousands of imposers.
The film takes us to 2030`s, when the world is in chaos and the United Kingdom is ruled by a totalitarian government under the fascist Norsefire party. They use media to manipulate with people and eliminate everybody who they think don`t fit in their society or could be a security risk. Therefore homosexuals, black people, Pakistanis and Muslims are simply exterminated. Unfortunately to the fascistic government, there is a mysterious Guy Fawkes-masked vigilante known only as V who dares to stand up to them. He blows up Old Bailey and takes over the state television broadcast to urge the people of Britain to rise up against the oppressive government and meet him in one year, on 5th of November, outside the Houses of Parliament, which he promises to blow up as well. On the night before detonating a bomb in Old Baley, V rescues a young woman, Evey Hammond, from an attempted rape by the memebers of the secret police. The women, played by Natalie Portman, becomes V`s only friend and an ally, as he continues the fight against the fascistic government.
I must say, I have mixed feelings towards this movie. It was really long - over two hours. The first hour seemed promising. The story was interesting. They showed backstories to the current events and everything. But the second half wasn`t so great. The story started to seem more and more meaningless with every minute. And the ending appeared rushed and simpleminded. Blowing up a building can change the world? Well, in Fight Club it can, but not in V for Vendetta. Nevertheless, it was quite okay and in Hollywood they make movies out of far more improbable stories. And it`s always a total pleasure seeing Natalie Portman, who`s acting in this one, was pretty respectable.
It`s seems like a lot of people liked this one. Despite all the unkind comments on metacritc, it has a score of 8.2 points out of 10 on IMDB and the tomatometer shows that 88% of the audience liked it. Almost makes me regret all the bad things I said about it. As it seems to be loved by everyone, I could receive a lot of those so called hate comments for this. So, therefore let me just say that I was only trolling and I actually really liked it. It was probably the best movie I`ve ever seen. No-no! What`s done, is done! I don`t agree with IMDB and the tomatometer once again. I`d give it 6.5/10 and 5 points are for Natalie. psychology-knowledgehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09721582861953383016noreply@blogger.com22tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5729854940561472994.post-87321788447991255302012-02-12T22:28:00.011+02:002012-03-01T00:50:50.009+02:00The Rum Diary
The Rum Diary is a 2011 film based on the novel of the same name by Hunter S. In his new office he meets some colorful persons. Even ends up living with one after his new boss doesn`t agree to pay for his hotel room anymore because Paul has made a gigantic bill sucking dry a lot of those small bottles of alcoholic beverages. Although, he begins the habit of drinking a lot of rum, he tries to write proper articles and be a good journalist. His faithfulness to true journalism however is put to the test when a crooked real estate developer, Hal Sanderson, wants to involve him on his manipulative plan for getting permissions to start building hotels on a rather untouched island. Things get even more spiced up as Paul falls in love with Sanderson`s fiancée.
It`s an amusing story with a lot of interesting characters and plenty of amusing incidents. Johnny Depp, to who it was not the first time to play a Hunter S. Thompson`s character, did an excellent job playing Paul Kemp. Paul Kemp`s love interest was played by Amber Heard. Her role did not take much of an effort. She just had to look naturally stunning like she does, and wear vivid red lipstick. And oh boy, she wore that lipstick alright! Aaron Eckhart played the role of the crooked real estate developer. And he is perfect for the role. His smile and literally everything about him, makes him perfect for playing roles like this. Michael Rispoli played the role of Pauls best friend and roommate, Bob Sala. He also added a lot to the movie as he was this carefree guy who watched his neighbour`s TV with binoculars, saying that he almost owns a TV. He had a smile on his face even in the most crappiest circumstances.
I must say I was rather pleased with this movie. And the tomatometer shows only 50% for this one. Well, I`d give it 7.5 out of 10. I`d give it more but I found the ending a little hasty. It felt as if they had forgotten themselves filming too many good scenes they wanted to keep in the move and therefore had to make the ending quick, so they could still fit in a previously set time. I`m sorry, but they stopped being funny somewhere in the middle of making the ninth season. The last season in fact only made me laugh once and that was when I got so bored watching the new dull episodes that I started to recall jokes they had made in earlier seasons. Anyways, this animated comedy film is set in the fictional dimension of Family Guy just like the sitcom. But unlike the episodes of the sitcom it`s nearly 90 minutes long. So it`s roughly three times longer. But is it three times as fun? Oh yes, yes it is. It`s hilarious.
As one could presume from the name of it, the plot centres around Stewie. The film starts with Griffins going swimming in the Quahog Community Pool where it turns out that little Stewie can`t swim. Therefore his mother, Lois, takes him to swimming lessons where Stewie meets a child about his age who is a great swimmer. Stewie instantly becomes jealous and wants to steal his glory. He tries everything. Even shaving off all his body hair to swim faster. But it`s all good for nothing as he just can`t swim. As a last resort he tries to kill that kid with a dynamite but ends up olny hurting himself. He ends up in hell where Steve Allen seems to try and rape him. After he is revived by Lois, he believes that the brief hell experience is a sign showing that he has to be a good boy for that moment on. While Stewie is doing his best on being a caring and well-behaved young boy, his father, the legendary Peter Griffin, is given a job at Quahog 5, hosting a segment called What Really Grinds My Gears, where he rants about things that bother him. Like Lindsay Lohan with all those little outfits, jumping around there on stage, half naked. I guess it`s important to note here that back in 2005 Lindsay hadn`t yet lost her looks. On one morning, Stewie wakes up with a hangover. Did I forget to mention that as Stewie found it very hard to act nice to other people, he turned to alcohol for help? Well he did. So on one morning he wakes up with a hangover and realises how lonely his existence in this world is. He wishes he had someome to relate to and on that very moment he notices a person on the TV checking in at a hotel in San Francisco who looks just like him but is an adult. Stewie starts to think that maybe that guy is his real father, not that idiotic fat man who he has been living with. And he wants to find out for sure. Therefore Stewie and Brian decide to get a ride with Quagmire, the pervert next door neighbour, to find that man who Stewie believes is his real dad. And that is when the journey begins. The journey that does not only take Stewie from Quahog to San Francisco, but also involves traveling in time and plenty of humorous incidents.
If you are a fan of Family Guy, then you have probably already seen it. If you are not, then I don`t really recommend you to start watching Family Guy with this film. There are a lot of in-jokes that you probably wouldn`t get. You should start with the pilot episode.
I have to say that I really liked this one. It`s definitely a lot better than Family Guy`s other straight-to-DVD releases. Although, it`s thrice as long as a normal episode, it didn`t feel intentionally stretched to be longer. There was always something going on to keep the audience entertained and every scene of this 88-minute long movie had a joke that worked.
On IMDB it has a score of 7.7 points out of 10 and the tomatometer shows that 83% of the audiece liked it.
Just so you all know, I heard from a reliable source that if you have not seen and don`t intend to watch the first 9 seasons of Family Guy (it`s okay do not haven seen the 10th one because it`s really bad) and this direct-to-dvd film, an evil monkey moves into your closet to intimidate you.

psychology-knowledgehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09721582861953383016noreply@blogger.com30tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5729854940561472994.post-65650175140025191402012-02-02T12:23:00.014+02:002012-02-05T11:50:07.673+02:00The Night in Lisbon The Night in Lisbon is a novel by Erich Maria Remarque published in 1962 that quickly climbed to the top of the American best-seller list.
The story takes place in 1942 in Lisbon, Portugal. The first-person narrator is a refugee from Hitler Germany and has come to Lisbon to try to get on a ship to America. Although, he and his wife both miss the necessary visas and tickets. On one evening he is staring at a ship anchored in the river Tagus, ready for departure to America the following day, when a stranger approaches and offers him two free tickets on the ship and a passport with a valid visa in exchange for keeping him company and listening his story. The stranger introduces himself as Josef Schwarz and explains that this is the name entered on his passport, but not his real name. Although, the narrator doubts the genuiness of the offer, he acceptes it.
During the course of that night, the two strangers move from cafés to night-clubs that are still open on the late hours as Josef Schwarz recounts his story. He starts from 1938 with how he received the passport of Josef Schwarz in Paris after five years as a refugee from Nazi Germany and finishes just few days before present. Schwarz`s story is quite romantic and it contains a lot of gripping encounters with Gestapo, near-misses, arrests and escapes.
Although, Remarque himself had no difficulties leaving Europe in 1939 with his wife because he already was a successful author, he has written this book about refugees who didn`t share his fortunate faith, explicitly, making it a very believable story.
I would recommend this one for anyone who is interested in 20th century European history as it is a very detailed book about exile from the Third Reich, but if you are just looking for something romantic and exciting then this might still be for you.psychology-knowledgehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09721582861953383016noreply@blogger.com32tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5729854940561472994.post-59544863498233093622012-01-29T10:26:00.011+02:002012-02-08T20:27:47.655+02:00The Pursuit of Happyness The Pursuit of Happyness is a 2006 drama film based on Chris Gardner`s close to one-year struggle with homelessness. Will Smith plays Gardner`s role and what definitely adds value to the movie is young Jaden Smith, Will Smith`s son, playing Gardner`s son Christophjer Jr. Film is directed by Gabriele Muccino.
The film takes the audience back to the year of 1981, when in San Francisco, Chris Gardner has invested his family`s savings in portable bone-density scanners. And his plan is to sell them to doctors to support his family. But doctors find the scanners unnecessary and expensive as they give only a slightly denser picture than the x-ray. That financially breaks the family and as a result, his wife, who had been working double shifts for months, can`t take it anymore and leaves him to move to New York. Their son remains with the father. On one fatal day while downtown trying to sell a scanner, Chris incidentally meets a stockbroker, who tells him that Dean Witter is recruiting interns. The stranger appears very happy to Chris. In fact, he finds everybody leaving and going into the Dean Witter`s building happy. Happy because they are financially secured. Happy because they probably don`t have to worry about unpaid bills or how to feed themselves and a child with five dollars. Happy for being financially secured. And financial security, is what the singel parent, Chris, seems to desire most in the world at that moment. Therefore he decides to apply for the internship. And although, on the applicaton he has nothing to write on the three lines reserved for education after high school, he gets it. Unfortunately it`s an unpaid postiton and he yet has to prove himself better than other interns to get a paid position on the firm. That is when the real struggle begins. A struggle that leaves Chris no choice but to find refuge for him and his child in a homeless center more than a few times and even sleep in a public toilet
Before starting writing, I took some time to read what others have wrote about this movie. I stumbled on a review that depreciated everything but Jaden Smith`s performance, saying that Chris Gardner`s incredible story definitely needed to be made into a film but this one just isn`t it. As I am not that familiar with Chris Gardner`s story, I only have seen this movie and don`t know anything more about the guy, I can`t agree or disagree with that reviewer. But I can say, that this movie as an inpsiring and dramatic story about fatherhood, is just fantastic. And that every child would be happy to have a father like Chris Gardner.
The tomatometer gives this one 6.4 points out of 10 and IMDB`s users 7.8. As this truly was 117 minutes of my life spent watching a great and heart touching movie, I must say, I agree more with IMDB`s users on this one or no. I don`t agree. It deserves more. I`d give it at least 8.5 points out of 10. And I do recommend it to anyone and especially to all the dads.psychology-knowledgehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09721582861953383016noreply@blogger.com37tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5729854940561472994.post-18173725556275400972012-01-26T11:33:00.011+02:002012-02-05T11:51:00.043+02:00Scott Pilgrim vs. the World Scott Pilgrim vs. the World is a 2010 comedy film, based on the graphic novel series of Scott Pilgrim by Bryan Lee O`Malley, directed by Edgar Wright.
The main character Scott Pilgrim is played by Michael Cera. If we would leave aside Scott`s unrealistic fighting skills, then Scott doesn`t seem that different from other characters Michael Cera has played over the years. Scott is a boy-like young man who lives with his gay roommate and friend in a tiny basement apartment just across the street from his parent`s house in Toronto Canada. Just like many characters Michael Cera has played before, Scott has abundant girl problems. There was this one girl Envy Adams who broke his heart a year and a half ago, and then there is Knives Chau, a 17-year-old Chinese school girl who Scotts starts dating when he finally starts to show signs of getting over Envy Adams. For a while everything seems to be going smoothly for Scott. He goes to band practice and hangs out with Knives. Things start to get complicated when a new girl Ramona Flowers, played by Mary Elizabeth Winstead, moves to town and catches Scott`s eye. Scott falls in love with her at the first sight. And that is when things start to get interesting. So this is the point I`m going to stop the retell as I don`t wanna spoil the surprises for anybody.
I read a few comments about this movie on IMDB and it seems like people either get it and like it or are as confused as a bird in a shopping center and don`t like it.
I guess if you start watching it and expect it to be a normal coming-of-age comedy and you are not enough open-minded to watch an unusual video-game-like approach to fight scenes and even going to the toilet, then you probably wouln`t like it. But if you are an open-minded person and like unusual things, then this just might be something you would like.
One really strong part of this movie is definitely the soundtrack. It features good old tunes like "Under my thumb" by The Rolling Stones, "I Heard Ramona Sing" by Frank Black and so on. But there is also alot of pretty decent original music being played as Scott is in a band and they are taking part in a battle of the bands contest.
On IMDB Scott Pilgrim vs. the World has a rating of 7.6/10 and on Rotten Tomatoes 7.5/10.
I`ll give it 8/10 and most definitely recommend it to all of you, who like things that are out of the box of boring usualness.
psychology-knowledgehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09721582861953383016noreply@blogger.com36tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5729854940561472994.post-3736814989035345352012-01-26T09:32:00.003+02:002012-01-26T12:51:25.439+02:00: )Hey, guys! So earlier on today I was looking for a movie to watch. I came on an idea to not read about the plot or even watch the trailer of the movie, I was going to watch, before watching it. I didn`t want to ruin any surprises. Usually I know quite alot about the movies I watch before watching them and that takes some excitement away. As I didn`t want to end up with something totally dull, I thought of making the decision of watching a movie or not on IMDB`s score. I silently agreed with myself that anything above 6 is good enough. The first movie, I was considering, had 6.9 points and was therefor okay to watch. It was Eden Lake.
It`s an Irish movie from 2008. And it`s pretty terrible . Sorry, If some of you have seen it and liked it, but I don`t. It is just full of brutal meaningless violence. It does give you the feeling like the story is building up for something really exciting to happen. But it doesn`t. It does give a strong point on why one should not give in to peer pressure. But only a brief scene is about that. The rest of the movie is still pointless violence. So unless you want to see something really disturbing, I don`t recommend it.

Other things this movie teaches:
Don`t ever go for a romantic weekend break with your girlfriend to Eden Lake, unless you are into getting murdered.
Don`t ever watch this movie again.
Don`t trust IMDB.

It definitely isn`t one of the most provocative and terryfing thrillers of the year of 2008.

The idea of not finding out too much about the movie, I am going to watch, is still good, though. This one rahter bad experience didn`t ruin it for me. If they would have not shown brief clips of violence in the opening credits, then for a while it would have seemed like it could be anything from what it really was to a heart-warming romantic comedy.psychology-knowledgehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09721582861953383016noreply@blogger.com27tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5729854940561472994.post-49012350614051832952012-01-15T23:48:00.017+02:002012-02-23T00:28:22.569+02:00Why you should not read your daily horoscope?

Oh, hey there! Do you read "your" horoscope? If you are,
you are probably just wasting your time and maybe even harming yourself if you intend to take it too seriously and make important decisions based on what your zodiac sign tells you. Do you really believe that half a billion people in the world are going to have the same problems and the same rewards as you because you were both born on the same month or under the same zodaic sign? I think not! The horoscopes you can find in newspapers and magazines are not exactly personalized. They want to apply to a large amount of people and end up applying to no one.
Being obsessed with puting everything to the test myself, I had to do a little experiment. Instead of ignoring the horoscope section of the newspaper like usually, I read it. But not just the one for sagittariuses, that is supposed to apply to me, but all of them. And I looked for things that could somehow describe the problems and other things I was currently having. And I must say, I did find some lines that could apply to me, but they were not under the half man half horse sign.
Although I don`t know if the guys who write this nonsense they call horoscope, spend hours looking at the stars and planets trying read them, before they start writing or do they just put together a few Barnum statements* for each sign and call it a night, I know they can`t be true either way. I did some reading and I read that astrology doesn`t even take into account all the major bodies in our Solar system, let alone all those in our galaxy or the hundreds of billions of other galaxies in the Universe. If they are trying to see connections between astronomical phenomena and events in our world, then shouldn`t they consider the full picture with everything on it?
Modern scientists consider astrology a pseudosciense as astrology has repeatedly failed to demonstrate it`s effectiveness in controlled studies. So why a lot of people in all parts of the world continue to read and belive horoscopes? Well, some scientists have suggested that much of the continued faith in astrology could be psychologically explained as a matter of cognitive bias. In other words, irrationality.
Adverse to what would seem rational, people continue to have faith in astrology. I ask, why is that so? To they eager to know what the future brings or to they just seek for guidance in their lives? Could be either. But if one would want to point a finger at somebody or something then it has to me media. People working in media are mostly college-bred. They should really know better. They shouldn`t print this quite possibly harmful fiction. But they do. Why? They don`t wanna lose readers and therefore money. Alot of people read horoscopes and if one newspaper would stop printing them, they would most likely start to order another one.
Well we have quite the situation here, don`t we? Newspapers can`t stop printing horoscopes as it could result the sales to fall. So what could be done for stopping this nonsense? The governments could forbid the printing of horoscopes, but even if horoscopes are possibly dangerouse, it would still feel like taking a toy from a child because it`s not rational to spend time playing. So the question remains. I personally think that every once in a while media should publish articles on why astrology isn`t reliable. And then maybe after some time has passed, they could drop printing them at all.
In conclusion I must say that maybe there is a relationship between astronomical phenomena and the events in our world, but we can`t use one do predict the other. At least not with the methods used so far. And if to be hones with you, I don`t even find it a loss. I think that it`s for the best. If we could actually predict future, then it would be as dull as watching an episode of your favourite soap after reading the summary of the episode from TV guide.

Now tell me what do you think of astrology? Do you read your daily horoscope?

Sorry for this part but a fellow blogger asked to promote her website about the 2012 - end of the world theory. www.2012-endoftheworld.com/ So if you have a few extra minutes, then there are some interesting articles you could read.

*Barnum statements are statements that people find personally unique and meaningful, but the statements could be applied to just about anybody. e.g You've gone through a lot of ups and downs over the past few years, emotionally and financially, and that has caused some stress in your life.
psychology-knowledgehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09721582861953383016noreply@blogger.com71tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5729854940561472994.post-64584134620779036182012-01-14T06:57:00.010+02:002012-02-05T11:53:52.950+02:00The Inbetweeners Movie

Hey! To those of you who have already seen three seasons of socially awkward and hilarious misadventures of Will, Jay, Neil and Simon, I have only to say, that it`s just as good as the TV series. Only longer. For those who havent, I have alot to say. Starting with, you guys, have missed alot.
So I watched The Inbetweeners movie. It`s a big-screen continuation to a British sitcom with the same name. The sitcom was cruel and pitiless. The four main characters looked just like the kind of chaps you can see walking on every street corner. They were no cool pretty boys. And that was for the best, though. It made it look so real. Like you are not watching a fictional show at all, just four average adolescent boys trying to climb up the social ladder and get acquainted with opposite sex. Of course, they failed more times than succeeded. The sitcom mostly took place in suburban London. In the movie, though, you can watch these four guys or the pussay patrol or the playas, like they like to call themselves, go on a holiday to Malia, Crete. And what a holiday that is.
I`m not gonna spoil it with a retell. You should just watch it yourself. It`s mental.

On IMDB they have received 7.2/10 points. From me, they get 9! That`s how mental it is.

If you are not into comedies, don`t worry. This movie has other values too. I haven`t yet wrote about any movies in this blog. So I guess that even if you have been a reader of my blog right from the very beginning, you don`t know that I`m quite the movie freak. But trust me, I am. And movie reviews are the short of a thing you can start to expect to find from here.
So yeah, I watched a movie named Adventureland. It takes the viewer all the way back to the summer of 1987 . To the summer when a high school grad James has to give up his plans to go to Europe for the summer with his best friend because his dad`s severe career setback So instead of a tour in Europe, James has to start looking for a summer job in Pittsburgh, to save up for college. What at first seemed like a hopeless job hunt, resulted in James getting a job in a local amusement park, Adventureland. And that is where the story actually begins. So that is where I´m gonna stop with the retell. Don`t wanna spoil it all for the potential viewers.
It says on IMDB that this movie classifies as comedy, drama and romance. I found it pretty dramatic and romantic, but not that comical. There were few jokes, but that hardly makes it a comedy. So if you are looking for something that will keep you laughing from the opening scene to the ending credits, this is not for you.
But if you are looking for a movie that will tell a great story where nothing is overwrought, like in not so many movies, it`s for you.
One of the really pleasant things about this movie is the music that accompanies the plot. The soundtrack features songs like "Pale Blue Eyes" and "Satellite of Love" by Lou Reed, "Don`t Change" by INXS and many more.
On IMDB Adventureland has received 7 points out of 10. I`m gonna be more kind than them. I`m gonna give it 8 points.
By the way, the picture I added to this post features one of the reasons to watch this movie - Margarita Levieva. Stunning looking girl. Goodbye for now!

psychology-knowledgehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09721582861953383016noreply@blogger.com37tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5729854940561472994.post-45629960355184470432012-01-12T01:10:00.001+02:002012-02-05T11:54:03.671+02:00What goes around comes aroundHello, followers and others, who randomly stumbled on my blog!
I had planed an entierly diffrent idea for writing today. I wanted to type about the absurd nonsense of daily horoscopes, but after a few fail attempts to start transforming my thoughs on that topic into words on my computer screen, I gave up. Hopefully I will feel less blank-minded about that idea tomorrow.

In meanwhile there`s an other topic I feel I could write about today. It`s short of a continuation to the post about karma.

What goes around comes around
It`s a proverb.
It basically means that a persons actions, whether good or bad, will always have consequences for that person.
In my last post I explained what is the popular misconception of karma, well that is the right conception for what goes around comes around.
While karma is something one can only believe or not believe, this proverb can be determined to be true or untrue.
I personally find it quite well-grounded. Surely there are exceptions, but commonly, this proverb seems to be true.
For an example, let`s say there is a random group of people, let`s say coworkers. Naturally, not all of them get along. They have their little conflicts, the backtalking - the normal stuff. Then a new coworker is hired. Let`s make it a her. Not that it matters. She is not a suck-up, but she acts good with everybody, tries to get along and is just bursting with positivity. Then naturally the others feel like they have to be good against her too. They would feel like it would be inappropriate to act any other way. And that`s how it works.
Of course, it works the other way around too. Violence begets violence.

So what do you guys think? In your experience, is this saying rather true or untrue?
psychology-knowledgehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09721582861953383016noreply@blogger.com35tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5729854940561472994.post-14765613544673533122012-01-09T20:16:00.001+02:002012-02-05T11:40:21.159+02:00What is karma and does it really exist?Hello, mates! Tonight I feel like writing about something seriouse. I`m thinking maybe about Karma and whether it exists or not? The idea to write about it basically came out of the blue. Let`s see, what comes out of this.
So karma. I guess we all have some kind of a basic understanding of what karma is. We think it`s this magical force that makes sure that bad things happen to those who have done bad to others. And we are not all sure of it`s existence. Right? Well I did some research.
First of all, the word karma is in Sanskrit and it means "action" or "deed". A concept of karma is believed to originate in the shramana tradition of which Buddhism and Jainism are continuations. It`s a believing that our actions in this life decides how we born in next. And by how I of course don`t mean whether dad gets mom to the hospital in time or will they decide to do a waterbirth. It decides whether we are born in better or worse circumstances compared to our previouse life. It seems like it could mean everything from health to whether our parents are living in a suburbian idyll or in a poor and starving village somewhere in Africa.
Secondly, Hindu, Jain, Buddhist and Sikh philospohies have treated the original shramana idea of karma and the meaning of karma differs slightly in different religions. I`m not going to write about them all, but it`s more than sure that the explanation for karma I gave in the first passage of this post, is only partially true. It`s the popular misconception.
Although, the word karma means "action", surprisingly in many religions the world around karma relies on the art of inaction, rather than the art of action. They think (I agree with them on this one) that an action cannot be good or bad and it`s the intention of the doer that can be either good or bad. Depending on the intention the nature of the consequences varies.
Thirdly, believing in existence of karma or not, is everyone`s individual choice. We can`t really prove it`s existence or non-existence.
I`m not saying I believe in karma, I don`t even certainly believe in reincarnation, but I do think that the world would be a better place if we all would believe in karma.psychology-knowledgehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09721582861953383016noreply@blogger.com58tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5729854940561472994.post-50763916144145444092012-01-08T00:55:00.002+02:002012-01-30T09:38:53.475+02:0050 books you should read before you die: Winnie-the-PoohI made myself a cup of tea and sat down behind my computer to write a new post. Normally I am packed with new ideas to write about. But not today. Today I was feeling as inspired as the writers of every Police Academy movie since the third one. I thought I could continue with the 50 books you should read before you die list. But I didn`t feel like getting into anything too serious. As I was excluding title after a title, I noticed Winnie-the-Pooh being on the list. And I thought to myself, why not. Winnie was awesome.

I don`t recall reading Winnie-the-Pooh myself. Although, I remember some of the adventures of Winnie and his friends. My mom probably read it to me when I was younger. And I`m glad she did. Hearing stories of Winnie-the-Pooh and his friends in the Hundred Acre Wood was just magical. Winni-the-Pooh is not just a simple children`s book, it teaches kids about some important values like charity, consideration and humanity.

As it is a children`s book I don`t really suggest you to read it on your own, but If you have younger siblings or kids of your own, then you should read it to them. If I ever have children, they are going to hear the hell out of this book.

I found a webpage where some of the best quotes of Winnie-the-Pooh are listed. That`s Estonian for hello. I was reading a blog post about South Korea earlier and that gave me an idea to start writing about interesting and exciting places and countries in my blog as well. I`m gonna try to keep it short and fun, rather than bore you with long sentences you could easily read on Wikipedia instead.
I`m gonna start with Estonia. I live in Estonia. I have lived here all my life and so have my parents and grandparents, therefor it`s not actually that easy to think of the things others could find exciting about our country and culture. But I`m gonna give my best.

Estonia has two Independence Days - we achieved independence from the Soviet Union on the 24th February 1918 and had to do it again on the 20th August 1991 after 51 years of occupation.

Estonia was the first country in the world to introduce online political voting.

Our roads are traffic jam free.
Estonia has a population of just 1.3 million but is larger than Denmark or Holland.
Therefor there just isn`t enough cars to cause traffic jams. There is pretty intense traffic on morning rush hours in our two most largest cities, but no real traffic jams.

Estonia is almost 50 percent forest.
There is a picture moving around on Internet showing that our flag is just a picture of our landscape in a winter period. It does look like that in hear. Although, not on this year. We are having a surprisingly warm winter this year.

By the way, the colours really represent all other things. Blue is still sometimes said to represent sky, but also faith, loyalty, devotion, sea and lakes. Black symbolizes the dark past and suffering of the Estonian people as well as the traditional black jacket of the Estonian peasant.
The white color represents striving towards enlightenment and virtue, hope and freedom.

In 1994, Estonia became the first country to institute the flat income tax.

Estonia is the world’s least religious country. They are called Rock am Ring and Rock im Park. While making a list of concerts where I would have most wanted to be, I can`t leave these two unmentioned.
Every year some of the most amazing groups of late 20th and 21st century are stepping on the stage of Rock am Ring and Rock im Park. I`ve seen video footage of these events from different years. It`s really hard to say to which years event I would like to go back to. But I`m almost sure it is the Rock am Ring of 2006. The lineup in 2006 wasn´t the most impressive in the events history. I made my choice mostly based on the individual performance of few groups.
I am not gonna share the lineup with you. It`s pretty long. Let`s just say that there were performers from Danko Jones and Metallica to Nelly Furtado and somewhere in the middle of these there were Placebo, Keane, Kaiser Chiefs, Franz Ferdinand and so on and so on.
There are many reasons why want to go back in time and take part in this magnificent festival. Instead of writing them, I`ll share one with you in video.psychology-knowledgehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09721582861953383016noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5729854940561472994.post-56706313150645768672012-01-05T18:53:00.000+02:002012-01-05T19:04:15.381+02:00Do you know the feeling?I made a comic. I wanted to use my own drawings, but it appears to be quite difficult to draw with your computer mouse and sadly I don`t own a scanner. So I ended up using those meme faces we are all familiar with. Needless to say, I wasn`t there. In 1994 I were only 3 years old and located on another continent. I watched It on YouTube. That gave me an idea to put together a list of 10 concerts I would have liked to go to If I would have been around at the time and at least 18 years old. To make it sound better, let`s name it 10 Concerts I Would Go to if I Had a Timemachine.

It was one of the last televised performances by Kurt Cobain, recorded about five months before his death.
The songs they played that night were absolutely fantastic. Their set list consisted some of their lesser known originals, covers of songs by David Bowie, Lead Belly, The Meat Puppets and The vaselines. Only two of their own "hits" were played that night, "come as You Are" and "All Apologies". Kurt Cobain was sitting almost the entire time on a comfortable office chair and moved the audience more than some of those artists who spend weeks before the show practising complicated choreography.

Red Hot Chili Peppers Live at Slane Castle In Ireland 2003.

This concert has been made into a DVD that critics didn`t like and fans were upset with because of the lack of pre-Blood Sugar Sex Magik songs. I`ve seen this DVD too and the only thing I am remotely upset about is that they left out "Soul to Squeeze" because John broke a string during that song. Leaving that kind of a mishap on the DVD would have made it more genuine.
Despite the lack of pre-Blood Sugar Sex Magik songs, I think that their set list on Slane Castle live was perfect. Peppers played a cover of "Havana Affair" by The Ramones, Flea and Frusciante sequed "Californication" with an improvised intro that almost literally has the ability to blow one`s mind and other great songs from Blood Sugar Sex Magik, Californication and By The Way.
By the way, the Foo Fighters also played as the opening act on this show.

I`m gonna stop hear for now. I don`t wanna make my posts too long. Next two are coming tomorrow.psychology-knowledgehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09721582861953383016noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5729854940561472994.post-77068598652047276052012-01-03T17:11:00.006+02:002012-02-05T11:36:39.653+02:0050 books you should read before you die: All Quiet on the Western FrontProbably all of you have seen the list of 50 books you should read before you die on a metal bookmark. I`ve even seen a few different versions of it. I stumbled on one of those lists last night and I found that I have already read many of the books from the list and those really were some of the most impressive books I`ve read. So I decided that I will complete this reading list and I`ll wrote a short review of every book on the list with minimal amount of spoilers. "Complete" maybe wasn`t the best word, because I may still leave some of them out. Like The Bible for an example. But I hope you will enjoy the reviews of the books I will read!

Erich Maria Remarque`s All Quiet on the Western Front.

This book tells a story of Paul Bäumer, a 19-year-old schoolboy who is urged by his schoolmaster to join the German army shortly after the start of World War I. It`s not an heroic story. It`s a story about the everyday horror of a World War I soldier - the constant fear of death, the constant treat of artillery fire, gas attacks and bombardments, hunger, the struggle to find food, loss of comrades, detachment form civilian life, dealing with permanent physical injuries and the role of random chance in surviving or not.
Through the experiences of Paul Bäumer, the reader sees that war can`t be divided into the bad and good sides. There are just people forced to fight each other for distant reasons a lot of them don`t even understand. People who in different circumstances might get a long quite well, maybe even be firends.
One of the most effective chapters in this book tells a story, how Paul after leathally wounding a French man, has to stay with him in a crater for countless hours. There he realizes the most painful truth. The man he had killed, is a man just like him. A man who may had even been worth more because he already had a family of his own to wait for him to return home, while Paul only had his parents and a sister.
What makes this book a 50 books you should read before you die list worthy read, is the effect of making the reader think about how he truly feels about war. And I can make a bet that anyone with half a brain will end up thinking pacifistic thoughts.

Here is the list of all the 50 books:
To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee
The Bible
The Lord of the Rings Trilogy by JRR Tolkien
1984 by George Orwell
A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens
Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte
Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen
All Quiet on the Western Front by E M Remarque
His Dark Materials Trilogy by Phillip Pullman
Birdsong by Sebastian Faulks
The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck
The Lord of the Flies by William Golding
The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time by Mark Haddon
Tess of the D'Urbervilles by Thomas Hardy
Winnie the Pooh by AA Milne
Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte
The Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Graham
Gone With the Wind by Margaret Mitchell
Great Expectations by Charles Dickens
The Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger
The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold
The Prophet by Khalil Gibran
David Copperfield by Charles Dickens
The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho
The Master and Margarita by Mikhail Bulgakov
Life of Pi by Yann Martel
Middlemarch by George Eliot
The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver
A Clockwork Orange by Anthony Burgess
A Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich by Alexander Solzenhitsyn

Some questions for the followers. Have you got around to any of the books on the list? If the answer is yes, then which and did you like them?

I just noticed that there are actually only 36 books on this list. Well, I`m not gonna rewrite the full post because of that. Let`s just leave it as it is. Maybe it was rounded up to sound better.psychology-knowledgehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09721582861953383016noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5729854940561472994.post-73041154847660717672012-01-01T04:19:00.000+02:002012-01-02T16:03:53.855+02:00Goodbye, 2011!Arab Awakening, 9.0-magnitude earthquake in Japan triggering a tsunami triggering the second largest nuclear accident in history, Fidel Castro`s resignation, the killing of FBI`s most wanted man Osama Bin Laden, E. coli O104:H4 outbreak, terror attack in Norway ending with 77 people dead and 151 injured, the start of a protest movement against social and economic inequality called Occupy Wall Street in New York that soon became a worldwide event taking place in 82 countries, financial crisis emerge in many European countries, violent death of Muammar Gaddafi the former leader of Libya, the world population reached over 7 billion, the death of North Korean superhero and a classic author Kim Chong Il and too many tragic natural disasters.

Yeah, we had an evenful year. Here I`d like to quote Estonias former, now decased, president Lennart Meri, he said that "The situation is shitty, but this is the fertilizer of our future."
This quote has been used in Estonia so many times it usually makes me sick to hear it, but here it seems to fit and writing it down in English, gives it a fresh state, so it doesn`t make my digestive system work backwards.

So now the year 2012 has arrived or should I say we have arrived to 2012, referring to a little theory I`ve been working on in my head about time being perfectly still and us moving in time. Well, I`m gonna leave explaining that to another time. Now I`d rather focuse on the new year, 2012. What to look forward to?

Well 2012 is going to put Mayan calendar on test! That`s definitely something to look forward to. Although, I`m pretty sure the end result is going to be something like people realizing that maybe the Mayans were just too lazy to write their calender longer than they did. And maybe they just had better things to do. And it`s not like they could have written an infinite calender? Let`s see.

I`m listening to Foo Fighters`s "Wheels". The first song I heard this year. That`s the beauty of staying home on New Year`s Eve, you can choose the first song you are gonna listen to in the new year and you are not gonna have a major hangover in the morning of 1st January.
I`m also reading some interesting articles like 15 Books to Look Forward to in 2012,
25 Things to Look Forward to in 2012, Ten Films to Look Forward to in 2012 etc.
I was gonna write a brief summary of them, but this post is already quite long as it is. And I`m tired. I`m really tired. Haven`t yet slept a bit this year. So I`m gonna leave it as it is for now.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!psychology-knowledgehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09721582861953383016noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5729854940561472994.post-22254917080254108442011-12-30T15:50:00.001+02:002012-01-30T09:42:34.599+02:00Top Gear unleashed in India.Last night I got around to watching Top Gear`s Christmas special on India. It was disappointing. They just did the usual stuff. By usual stuff I mean they traveled to a foreign country, Jeremy acted like a child and made a total fool out of himself quite a few times, James May got lost and Richard Hammond wore hairstyling products. Everything was like it has been for many seasons before.
So why was I disappointed? Well, few months ago I stumbeld on a copy of Jeremy Clarkson`s Motorworld. It`s a book he wrote about the show he was making back in 1995 and 1996. I must say it was surprisingly interesting. He traveled to some of the most unbelievable places - Cuba, Iceland, Outbacks of Australia, Vietnam, Monaco, India, Detroit, Dubai, Texas, Italy... Maybe a few slipped my mind here. But hey, some of these don`t really sound like unbelievable places? Like Italy for an example. But did you know that Jeremy Clarkson tried to reach top speed with a Sierra Cosworth and the police stopped him only to tell him to go even faster because they too were interested in Cosworth`s top speed? And that there are cowboys in the Outbacks of Australia gathering cattle with helicopters? That there are old American cars in Cuba running on Lada engines? That in Dubai there is this guy called Rainbow Shake who has a replica of 1950`s Dodge Power Wagon so huge that it weights about 50 tons, has wheels from an oil rig transporter and it even has four air conditioned bedrooms and a living room and a bathroom and it even moves around on it`s own diesel engine? Jeremy Clarkson`s Motorworld book was so unbelievable that I had to watch the show of the same name just to check out if he is telling the truth or not. And he was. They had found some of the most shocking places on Earth. Jeremy Clarskon`s Motorworld was a great show and therefor I found the usual Top Gear`s fooling around a little disappointing.psychology-knowledgehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09721582861953383016noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5729854940561472994.post-25365329830728830042011-12-29T16:25:00.000+02:002011-12-29T17:04:53.993+02:00Thoughts on a clever cardI was surfing the Internet and I stumbled on a card saying that people say bad memories cause the most pain, but really it`s the good ones that drive you insane.
So true, right? Yeah. I think so too. The thing with bad memories is that if they come to mind after some time has past, then you`re just happy that you survived and that you are not at that point anymore. But good memories they come to haunt you. At first you feel good about them, but then you realize that as Heraclitus said you can`t step into the same river twice. You cannot relive the good memories you have and knowing that, really can drive one out of his or hers mind.
So maybe we should try to avoid having good time for not causing painful memories?
No, we should rather turn those memories into inspiration for trying to get the best out of every situation we are in. We should live every moment to the fullest. Because if good memories are painful to recall and future is just a series of moments that you are not in right now, then all we really have is the moment we are in right now. Let`s not waste it for worrying about the future. If one spends his days worrying too much about things that are yet to come, then he or she doesn`t really live at all. We are alive now, let`s not forget that.psychology-knowledgehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09721582861953383016noreply@blogger.com0
